IEEE ITSS/ITE Joint Symposium on Deployment of
Intelligent Transportation Systems
Where Rubber Meets the Road: Linking Research and Practice
November 6, 2018
Maui, Hawaii, USA
The IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS) and the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) will jointly organize a symposium in conjunction with the 2018 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC). This joint symposium will bring the research community (ITSS membership community) and practitioners (ITE membership community) together to facilitate exchanges on opportunities and challenges in deploying advanced ITS technologies. The symposium will feature the following sessions:
Session 1 – Smart Communities and Connected/Automated Technologies
Cities are looking for a people-based approaches that use new and emerging technologies as enablers to support livable, prosperous communities that provide opportunities for all citizens. ITE is developing a Smart Communities initiative and an emphasis on the effective deployment of connected and automated vehicle technology. The panelist will present and discuss a variety of technical and policy issues associated with the implementation and deployment of connected and autonomous vehicle technologies and strategies.
Session 2 - Vision Zero
With the unacceptable loss of life that occurs annually due to traffic crashes and in light of the significant rise in fatalities in the US over the last two years. ITE has committed to building a stronger safety culture among its members underpinned by a Vison Zero mindset. The technical communities have developed various vehicle and infrastructure based crash avoidance and mitigation technologies. In this symposium, the state-of-the-art vehicle and infrastructure based collision avoidance technologies will be presented. Discussions will be focus on how these technologies can be utilized as tools and resources to reduce the loss of life.
Session 3 – Dialogue on Bringing Research and Practice Together
A free form of conversations will be carried out among panelists and with the audience. The questions to be discussed include:
- How can research influence practice?
- How to translate research findings into technical guidance?
- How can practice influence research?
- What are the highest priority research needs?
- How can both communities work together more effectively?
Agenda
This symposium is organized jointly the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS) and the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) in conjunction with IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC). The IEEE ITSC is the premier conference for Intelligent Transportation Systems, participated by many leading experts in the fields of connected and automated vehicles, advanced driver assistance systems, new traffic management systems, human factors, and sensors. This joint symposium brings the research community (ITSS membership community) and practitioners (ITE membership community) together to facilitate exchanges on opportunities and challenges in deploying advanced ITS technologies.
