As the cost of testing novel applications continues to rise, the demand for extensive testing is increasing every day. While renting full-size test tracks is one option, we must explore alternatives to reduce the effort involved.

The Principle Behind our Scaled Vehicle Fleet
We present a connected vehicle fleet that consists of one 1:3.33 scaled Renault Megane and four 1:5 scaled Tesla Model 3 vehicles. The larger vehicle is highly over-actuated, allowing it to steer, brake, and accelerate all four wheels independently, to enable high-definition vehicle dynamics control testing. In contrast, the four smaller cars are designed more like conventional vehicles, with steering limited to the front axle and a focus on cooperative driving and risk-based decision-making.
Additionally, a seamless connection between the CARLA simulator and the perception systems of all fleet vehicles enables augmented testing, while real world factors and dynamics still apply. This approach reduces the need for a fully scaled-down testing environment; a simple parking lot can suffice!

Discover the future of transit! This live demonstration showcases four 1:10 scale cooperative, connected, and autonomous vehicles operating seamlessly on a figure-eight track with a central intersection.

How It Works
Each vehicle is equipped with wireless communication capabilities based on ITS-G5 technology operating in the 5.9 GHz band. Vehicles periodically exchange status information with a centralized controller, which computes optimal crossing strategies and sends coordination commands in real time. This setup enables vehicles to traverse the intersection at regulated speeds without stopping, ensuring both safety and efficiency, and demonstrates the impact of communication and coordination on future cooperative mobility services.
